Diagnosis of Gnathostomariidae Sterrer, 1972

Scleroperalia with one pair of apicalia and 4 pairs of short (max. 35 µm) compound bristles, of which the ventralia originate closer to the rostralia than to the dorsalia. Ciliary pits present. With an unpaired prepharyngeal gland. Epidermal cells not in stripes, epidermal inclusions scattered. Male copulatory stylet not of the rod type and hardly cuticularized or lacking. Sperm fairly large, round, and with a bunch of fairly long filaments. Basal plate shield-like; jaws more or less lamellar but not closed, without a cauda; teeth connected basally by a cuticular lamella and arranged in a ventro-rostral arc. Without a jugum. Without ability to swim backwards.
