Diagnosis of Mesognathariidae Sterrer, 1972

Scleroperalia without or with one pair of apicalia and 4 pairs of short (30 µm) compound bristles of which the ventralia originate closer to the rostralia than to the dorsalia. Ciliary pits present. With an unpaired prepharyngeal gland. Epidermal cells not in stripes, epidermal inclusions scattered. Male stylet of the rod type. Sperm small, round or polygonal, usually with a bunch of short filaments. Basal plate shield-like and often very delicate; jwas lamellar but not closed, without a cauda; teeth connected basally by a cuticular lamella and arranged in one or two ventro-rostral arcs. Without a jugum. Usually with ability to swim backwards.
