Schilke (1970) defined this taxon as a subgenus. Doe (1974), following Evdonin, split it into three groups. Noldt (1985) declares it paraphyletic. Karling (1989) declared rank as genus, recognizing it as a paraphyletic complex split out of Proschizorhynchus (whose species have a characteristic sclerotic copulatory structure).
