All species of Messoplana were transferred to Certopera by Van Steenkiste & Leander (2018) (citation) because M. pacifica grouped with other Ceratopera species in their molecular phylogeny. However, Diez et al. (2026) (citation) found M. falcata was distinct from Ceratopera spp in their molecular phylogeny,
