Diez & Schmidt-Rhaesa (2024) (citation) found species of Bothromesostoma fell within a clade of Mesostoma species in a majority-rule consensus tree from the Bayesian analysis of the concatenated 18S + 28S rDNA dataset of Rhabdocoela and suggest synonymizing Bothromesostoma with Mesostoma. They say, "Braun (1885) distinguished these two genera based on the morphology of the testes and the presence of a ventral, epidermal follicle (“Hautfollikel”): species of Mesostoma were characterised by two compact testes and the absence of a follicle, whereas species of Bothromesostoma had follicular testes and a ventral, epidermal follicle (“glandular sac” as termed by Marcus 1946, 1960). However, these traits appear to have evolved or been lost multiple times within the group."
