La planaria chilena Dugesia sanchezi (Platyhelminthes: Turbellaria) y Dugesia bonaerensis n. sp., planaria de la pampa humeda de Buenos Aires, Argentia.

Abstract / Notes

The anatomy, in particular their reproductive systems, of two species of planarians, Dugesia sanchezi Hyman
1959 and Dugesia bonaerensis n. sp. is described. The differences are: (1) shape and localization of the
penial spermiducts; (2) sexual secretions (physiology of the copula); (3) types of epithelia of the atria,
penis and bursal canal; (4) exit of ovoviteloducts; (5) habitat; (6) thickness of the basal membrane of the
dorsal epidermis. The use of a new differential criterium in the taxonomy of planarians: the physiology of
the copula, is introduced. Dugesia sanchezi is a Chilean planarian which lives under stones in rivers and
streams from Central Chile. The argentine populations of Dugesia from the damp pampas of Buenos Aires, would
possess a cryptic polymorphism and among these sibling species, the most abundant would be Dugesia
bonaerensis n. sp., described here. The planarian from Buenos Aires studied by Bohmig (1902) are not a
geographic variant of Dugesia sanchezi as Hyman had considered in 1959. Besides, the suspicion of this author
about the mistake made by Bohmig when he nominated his specimen Dugesia anceps (Kenk 1930), is confirmed.
