Abstract / Notes
A synopsis of actually valid considered species of the subfamily Mesostominae is proposed. The presentation is based on the revision of original descriptions, of serial sections (holotypes), and on the preparation of serial sections of new material. In addition to diagnostic features commonly used within the subfamily, a high value of species classification is set on the following organization features, too: Entrance of vasa deferentia and granular glands in the male organ separate or common, cuticularization of the ductus ejaculatorius exterior, and position of the female canal to the male system. Result of this comparative study is the establishment of three genera within the Mesostominae: Mesostoma Oersted. 1844, Bothromesostoma Braun, 1885, and Marcomesostoma gen. n. The genera Mesostoma and Bothromesostoma include 34 valid species. Based on the presence of a ductus communis inferior and superior, a true prostatic vesicle, and cuticularly lined spines in the atrium, cirrus, and ductus superior Mesostoma evelinae Marcus, 1955 is transferred to the genus Marcomesostoma gen. n., Marcomesostoma evelinae (Marcus, 1955) comb. nov.
