Abstract / Notes
Samples of sand were taken from beach in Sweden, from various levels down to subsoil water, in June and in Oct. Physiography of beach described. Sand was formed by erosion of Cambrian sandstone which is typical bedrock of area. It is coarse and uniform. Beach, which extends for about 2 km , is open to all winds from an e. direction, and slopes rather steeply. There are no protecting sandbanks and no tides. There is little organic material. Uniformity of sand grains is striking, grains with a diameter between 2.0 and 0.5 mm making up 85% of total. Temperatures and salinity data, obtained from 2 sections, are given. Total no., of identified spp. of Metazoa collected was 56. Subterranean fauna discussed, and divided into 2 groups. Notes given on spp. obtained, consisting of 7 Turbellaria; 8 nematodes including Theristus heteroscanicus and Monhystera dahli ; 1 gastrotrichan, 1 polychaete, 5 spp. of Oligochaeta; 6 spp. of Crustacea, including 1 undescribed n. sp.; 9 spp. of Collembola, 17 spp. of Acarida, including 3 n. spp. to be described elsewhere; and 2 spp. of Halacarida.
