Acta Zootaxonomica Sinica 30(4): 714-720

Abstract / Notes

Three new species of the genus Macrostomum, Macrostomum sinensis sp. nov., Macrostomum acus sp. nov. and
Macrostomum obtusa sp. nov., in Guangdong Province of China are described in this paper. All of the specimens
were kept in the Morphological Research Laboratory of Life Science College, Shenzhen University, Guangdong
China.1 Macrostomum sinensis sp. nov. (Figs. 1-8) Holotype 1, SZ200311- I -1, found in a fish pond near the
Pingshan Reservior, Longgang district, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China (22.61[degree] N, 114.13[degree]
E) in Nov. 2003. Paratypes 17, SZ20031- I -2-18, from the same location as holotype. Description. The body of
live individuals is milk-white, with bean-, cycle-, kidney- or long kidney-like eyes. Body length ranges from
1700 [mu]m to 1760 [mu]m. The vesicula seminalis, which connects the false vesicula seminalis in a U shape,
sits left side of the body. The vesicula granulorum lies the left side of vesicula seminalis. The penis,
keratose and length 220-280 [mu]m, bends on one plane in J shape. The end of penis is spinous, twisting
vertically from penis plane. Habitat. The new species was found in a fish pond (Altitude 50 in). Some kinds
of invertibrate were observed in the pond, in which water is clear freshwater, temperature 22[degree]C, pH
7.6 and average depth 150 cm. Etymology. The new species was named as the country of China. Remarks. The
present species, Macrostomum sinensis sp. nov., has different characters to the close species of M.
pithecusae Papi, 1959. The penis spine of the latter is length 38 [mu]m, extending on the penis plane. 2
Macrostomum acus sp. nov. (Figs. 9-17) Holotype 1, ZJCK200305-III-1, found in a pond located at the
downstream of Chican Reservior, Chican District, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, China (21.18[degree] N,
110.4[degree] E), Dec. 2003. Paratypes 17, ZJCK200305- III -2-18, from the same location as holotype.
Description. The body of live individuals is milk-white, with kidney-like eyes. Body length ranges from 2
200-2 560 [mu]m. The two testis is small, with no division. The false vesicula seminalis, vesicula seminalis,
vesicula granulorum and keratose penis sit in turn lengthwise. The keratose penis is needle-like, length
116-132 [mu]m. Habitat. The new species was found in a pond (alt. 50 in). Some kinds of invertibrate were
observed in the pond, in which water is clear freshwater, temperature 26[degree]C, pH 8.1 and average depth
100 cm. Living individuals could be raised in laboratory for several months. Etymology. Refers to the syringe
needle-like penis of the live individuals (Greek acus- meaning syringe needle, surgery needle). Remarks. The
present species, Macrostomum acus sp. nov., has different characters to the close species of M. tenuicauda
Luther (1947), which the body length is about 1200 [mu]m. The keratose penis of M. tenuicauda Luther (1947)
is length 56-75 [mu]m. The vesicula seminalis sits the other side of penis. 3 Macrostomum obtusa sp. nov.
(Figs. 18-26) Holotype 1, SZ200311- II -1, found in a pond near the Pingshan Reservior, Longgang District,
Shenzhen, Guangdong Province China (22.61[degree] N, 114.13[degree] E) in Dec. 2003. Paratypes 19, SZ200311-
II -2-20, from the same location as holotype. Description. The body length of live individuals ranges from 2
760- 3 150 [mu]m, with kidney-like eyes. The body shows the cecum-like protrude when the body shrinks. The
two testis have 3-5 leaves. The false vesicula seminalis, vesicula seminalis and keratose penis sit in turn
lengthwise. The keratose penis is blunt needle-like, length 82-91 [mu]m. The penis stylet gonopore opens on
the side of the penis end, which is ball-like. Habitat. The new species was found in a freshwater pond (al.
50 in). Some kinds of dead invertibrate were observed in the pond, in which water is foul odor, temperature
22[degree]C, pH 7.3 and average depth 150 cm. The pond is almost covered by the duckweed. Individuals of the
new species live on the underside of the duckweed. Etymology. Refers to the obtuse penis end of the live
individuals (Greek obtusus- meaning obtuse). Remarks. The present species, Macrostomum acus sp. nov., has
different characters to the close species of M. tenuicauda Luther (1947) and M. acus sp. nov. The penis of M.
tenuicauda is length 56-75 [mu]m. The vesicula seminalis sits the other side of penis. The penis of M. acus
sp. nov. is length 116-132 [mu]m, with needle-like end. The two testis is small, with no division.
