Abstract / Notes

Cephalic pieces of Planaria lugubris including eyes and ganglionic region, but with cut surfaces on all sides, implanted postorally develop a head from the posterior cut surface when this remains free and anterior, or anterior and lateral surfaces unite with host tissue. When anterior and posterior surfaces unite with host tissue and one or both lateral surfaces remain free, one or two heads may reconstitute from the one or two free surfaces. Since isolated head-pieces very rarely develop heads posteriorly, the author regards development of posterior or lateral heads on the implants as resulting from decrease or absence of dominance and consequent physiological isolation of the free surface or surfaces of the implant united with host tissue by its anterior end.
