Histological changes produced by fresh water upon isolated and grouped Procerodes, a marine Turbellarian.
Protoplasma 20(4): 516-529

Abstract / Notes

When numbers of Procerodes wheatlandi are placed in tap-water, they form clusters and are thus protected against the hypotonicity in contrast to single individuals similarly treated. Sections from the single worm, and from a member of the cluster having had the same exposure in the same volume of tap-water and fixed before the time of disintegration, present the same histological pictures. The latter indicate that mucus and leachings of substances from the cells of the various organs may be responsible for the observed protection and it is probable that protection is afforded to members of the group because of the lesser amount of surface exposed to the lethal action of the tap-water. Paramecium-conditioned water gives the same results.
