Abstract / Notes
"The regenerative capacities of transverse pieces of the Japanese freshwater planarians, D. lactea and P. sapporo from Aomori Prefecture were compared with those of the same species from Hokkaido _Japan_. D. lactea from Sapporo has 2 pairs of principal eyes. In the same species from Kuroishi, Aomori, 1 or 2 pairs of principal eyes are found. The capacity for head regeneration differs between the animals from the 2 localities. The head frequency curve of the animals from Hokkaido decreases from anterior levels along the main axis of the body, especially at the levels posterior to the pharyngeal base. The curve of the animals from Aomori falls to zero in the tail region, although it shows a curve similar to that of the animals from Sapporo. The eyespot number variation of P. sapporo shows no remarkable difference between Hokkaido and Aomori. The head frequency of the species from Aomori is higher than that of the same species from Hokkaido. The head frequency curves of planarians can be classified into 8 types."
