Abstract / Notes
"Exotic land flatworms have been found sporadically in the Netherlands in the past decades, but no systematic search had been done so far. In an attempt to update our limited knowledge, we searched for land flatworms in a selected number of greenhouses in both zoological and botanical gardens during the summer of 2020. Furthermore, we collected finds of worms by citizen scientists in their garden plots. This resulted in five new species for the Netherlands: Anisorhynchodemus spec., Caenoplana cf. micholitzi, Dolichoplana spec., Obama nungara and Parakontikia ventrolineata. This raises the number of exotic land flatworms reported for the country to nine species, including Caenoplana coerulea and the already established Bipalium kewense. In this article we also register five more sites where Caenoplana variegata has been found, and one more site where Marionfyfea adventor was found, all in garden plots. Our study suggests that enhancement of public awareness will lead to increased finds of land flatworms."
