Abstract / Notes
Two species have been designated by the name P. littoralis. To one, described by Strom in 1768, Meller gave the name P. littoralis in 1776; in 1843 it was called P. ulvae by Oersted, and was subsequently shifted to Procerodes by Stimpson, 1857. The other species erroneously designated as Planaria littoralis is Oersted's P. affinis, the error having arisen through a mistake in the labelling of Oersted's figures. P. affinis was later assigned to Fovia by Stimpson and recently to Foviella by Bock. The present name of P. affinis is thus Foviella affinis. The well-known Procerodes ulvae is thus identical with Strom's Planaria littoralis and the name of this species must thus be changed to Procerodes littoralis (Planaria littoralis, P. ulvae, Procerodes ulvae, Gunda ulvae).
