Abstract / Notes

This family previously held only one species, Hofstenia atroviridis. A new species H. pardii is described,
having as principal characters: Superficial nervous system; central sense organ; statocysts around the
parenchyma; anterior ventral buccal cavity; pharynx with normal muscles and a proximal sphincter. Digestion
occurs in a parenchymal cavity; the testes are compact, the copulatory organ has a muscular vesicula
seminalis and cuticular penis. The female organ is solid; impregnation is dermal. H. pardii is a more
primitive form than H. atroviridis and shows it's association with the Acoela. It is proposed to transfer the
family Hofstenidae to the Acoela as a new group, the Diproporida-Abursalia.
