From Schärer et al. 2011 (citation): "Macrostomum spirale Ax 1956 was discovered by Schulz from a sandy mudflat in Amrum, Germany. It was supposed to be described by Meixner, but his original account was never published because of the Second World War. The species later was described formally by Ax from the Etang de Canet, near Perpignan, France." Note also that Luther 1960 (citation) synonymizes M. spirale with M. balticum, but he does not refer to the detailed description of Ax 1956, which is clearly distinct from M. balticum of Luther 1947 (citation).
