Abstract / Notes
Serum was prepared from rabbits previously injected with a 0.85% NaCl extract of E. dorotocephala. Various concs. were applied to living E. dorotocephala. Identical concs. of serum from uninjected rabbits were used as controls. No disintegration occurred in the controls, but in the serum from treated rabbits the planarians disintegrated. The higher the conc. the more rapid the disintegration. Serum from rabbits recently injected was more effective than that from rabbits several wks. after inj. Disintegration in 65 cases out of 80 began at the ant. end and proceeded posteriorly. The post. end began to disintegrate before disintegration of the first zooid was completed. In others post. disintegration slightly preceded the ant. Assuming the serum antibodies to be precipitins, it is concluded that the reactivity of the proteins along the long axis of E. dorotocephala decreases from ant. toward posterior within the zooid.
