Abstract / Notes
The polyclad Turbellarian ascends the walls of a glass vessel and floats submerged at the surface of the water in an inverted position as if the liquid surface were a solid. The phenomenon is analogous to that observed when a needle is floated on the surface of water. Addition of a drop of dilute amyl alcohol, ether, or of the digestive juices of Sipunculus nudus to the water immediately over the suspended animal produces local lowering of surface tension and the animal drops to the bottom. The additions are not themselves toxic.
