Abstract / Notes
This new dendrocoelid, from Flathead Lake, Montana, is the 3d sp. of the family Dendrocoelidae to be found in N. Amer. It is white, with 2 eyes and an adhesive organ in the middle of the truncate anterior end; length, 15-20 mm. Dendrocoelopsis differs from Dendrocoelum in the absence of an adenodactyl, and D. vaginatus (p.339) differs from the only other known sp. of the genus, D. spinosipenis, found in Jugoslavia, in the more extensive muscularization of the bursa stalk, the absence of cutic-ular spines on the penis, and the more expanded atrium. Both species are peculiar and differ from other triclads in the reduction of the covering epithelium of the penis papilla to a flat cuticularized layer due to the conversion of most of this epithelium into a fibrous layer, which confers an unusual stiffness on the penis.
