Abstract / Notes
Dugesia Girard 1850 is a valid genus and has priority over Euplanaria Hesse 1897. The 4 American spp. previously assigned to Euplanaria (tigrina, dorotocephala, agilis, microbursalis) are transferred to Dugesia. The synonymy and color variations of D. tigrina (old name, Planaria maculata) are discussed and the conclusion reached that the color variations cannot be regarded as taxonomically distinct although they may represent the beginning of speciation. Euplanaria novangliae Hyman 1931 is made a synonym of D. tigrina. Eu. philadelphica Hyman 1931 is made a synonym of D. dorotocephala. The sexuality of D. tigrina is discussed and as an alternative to Kenk's theory (1937) that this sp. occurs in sexual and asexual races, it is proposed that sexual development is dependent on exposure during youth to running or moving water.
