Abstract / Notes
The eosinophilous spheres seen in the intestinal epithelium of planarians are not zymogen granules. Their size and number depend on the length of time elapsed since feeding. The larger balls seen within 3-4 days after feeding are protein food balls in the final stages of digestion. The small spheres occurring in clusters in club-shaped cells are protein reserve. The digestive enzymes of planarians are secreted by the ordinary epithelial cells of the intestine and have no visible precursors in these cells.
