Abstract / Notes
Plagiostomes of the Holarctic were revised with the aid of a numerical polytomous key (NPK) (Balkovsky, 1960). NPK is a method of species identification which allows simultaneous comparison with the whole complex of characters of the forms. Forms (46) of Plagiostomum are considered by the NPK, descriptions of 45 based on histological slides. The polytypic character of Plagiostomum (Plicastoma) cuticulata was determined. P. ponticum, P. anocelis sensu Westblad, 1956, P. drygalskii and P. cuticulata sensu Westblad are not synonyms of the previously known forms. The taxonomic status of these species, as well as that of P. coecum and P. oyense, was clarified. P. coecum is closely related to P. girardi. P. anocelis sensu Westblad is a new species now called P. brandtneri. P. oyense is a synonym of P. caudatum. P. cuticulata is subdivided into 2 new subspecies: P. cuticulata scandinavica (syn. P. cuticulata sensu Westblad, 1956) and P. c. cuticulata (Brandtner, 1934). Non-conspecificity of P. drygalskii and P. ochroleucum was proven.
