Abstract / Notes
In August of 2002, an unusual low water level of Lake Biwa-ko was observed. At that time, the occurrence of many non-sexual specimens of rather small freshwater planarian species (ca. 1Omm long) attached to Elodea was found in the Kinohama Beach, the southern basin of the Lake (Photo 1: top). The animal has typical pigment patterns on the dorsal surface of the body. Moreover, conspicuous pigment patterns were also found on the surface of the pharynx (see Photo 2: bottom). This species seems to be Girardia tigrina (Girard, 1850). According to Nishino-[long dash]Kawakatsu's unpublished data, a few specimens of this cosmopolitan species were already collected from the Kinohama Beach and the vicinity (Feb. 1995 and Nov. 1999). Our new data of 2002 reported here indicate that G. tigrina is already naturalized in the Kinohama Beach of the Lake.Home page -- (Main hierarchy) |
