Abstract / Notes

First report in France of a sexual population of Girardia tigrina (GIRARD, 1850) KENK 1974 (Platyhelminthes, Turbellaria, Tricladida, Dugesidae), the fourth in Europe. Although native from North America, the species is today present in four continents due to its great colonizating ability. Up to now, only three sexual populations are known In Europe. We present here the fourth, in the Herault river, Languedoc-Rossello, France. This population coexist with three other planarian species (Dendrocoelum lacteum (MULLER, 1774), Schmidtea polychroa (SCHMIDT, 186 1), and Dugesia sp.), and with another Girardia tigrina population, fissiparous. A morphological description of the reproductory apparatus has been used for species level identification. This description corresponds with that done for sexuade Girardia tigrina from Menorca, class C under RIBAS (1990) classification.
